Oral Surgery Course
Designed for all experience levels, this blended oral surgery course offers both theoretical and practical training using pigs’ heads. The focus will be on basic extractions, root removal, simple suturing techniques, and an introduction to sectioning.
Delegates will receive 7 hours of verifiable CPD.
This course is well-suited to general dentists looking to build a stronger foundation in surgical skills, particularly those considering progressing toward dental implants.
Aims:
- To look at oral anatomy and how it relates to surgical planning
- To understand the range of instruments and materials available to the surgeon (to include types of sutures and haemostats available) and the technique to use them
- To look at how we assess different patients and teeth
- To review basic exodontia techniques
- To progress on to simple surgicals and the principles of flap design, removal of obstructions and bone removal
- To discuss different extraction plans for different teeth
- Look at the correct terminology and nomenclature for impactions
- Look specifically at wisdom tooth removal and the relevant approach to different types of impactions
- Look at the surgical approach relating to relevant anatomy like the IDC and lingual nerve
- Look at some of the sequelae of treatment and non-treatment
- Revise some basic nerve anatomy, relating to innervation of the teeth and jaws
- Revise different local anaesthetic techniques (including IDB v infiltrations in the mandible)
- Look at reasons for failure of anaesthesia
Objectives
At the end of the module delegates will be able to:
- Understand how oral anatomy relates to oral surgical procedures
- Identify appropriate surgical instrumentation and use them effectively
- Establish a systematic approach of progressing through controlled simple to more difficult surgical extractions
- Identify the different types of impactions we commonly encounter
- Advise their patients appropriately about behavioural management and medical issues surrounding treatment of these cases
- Choose an appropriate treatment approach for individual patients
- Use a systematic assessment to plan a surgical approach for the removal of wisdom teeth
- Understand the risks involved in wisdom tooth removal, how to plan to avoid them and deal with them should they arise
- Manage surgical removal of wisdom teeth
- Explain the anatomy and nerve supply of the teeth and jaws
- Recognise common reasons for failure of anaesthesia

Joe qualified from Queen’s University, Belfast, in 2000. He then relocated to Manchester to continue his education and soon joined a leading central Manchester maxillo-facial unit enabling him to participate in major reconstructive surgery.
It was in this post that Joe gained his Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
Joe then returned to his native Enniskillen and shortly after he graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in England with an Advanced Diploma in Implant Dentistry.
Joe has travelled the world in order to learn new techniques from many of the best dental educationalists. Many trips to the USA, Germany, Spain, Brazil, South Africa and the UK has enabled Joe to offer many advanced treatments such as implants, gum grafts, full mouth rehabilitations and digital smile design.
As recognition of the high standard of Joe’s treatment he was awarded the Best Young Dentist in Northern Ireland 2011. He has since received further recognition from the dental industry in 2017 when he was invited to become a Fellow of the prestigious International College of Dentistry.
Joe enjoys giving back to the profession and he currently mentors dentists in the field of oral surgery and with implant treatments.
Not one to sit still throughout the Covid pandemic he has continued developing his academic credentials. He is working towards his Membership of Advanced General Dental Surgery diploma at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
